VirtuCare Project

The COVID-19 pandemic made virtual healthcare a reality as telehealth was rapidly scaled up to deliver healthcare.  However, the health and rehabilitation needs of people with disability were not always considered.

In India telehealth is increasingly playing a critical role in ensuring the continuity of care for hundreds of thousands of people. E-Sanjeevani alone facilitates 450,000 telehealth consults each day.

The VirtuCare project brought together experts from industry, government and academic institutions to explore how virtual health initiatives can be responsive to the needs of people with disability. The findings are being used to develop solutions to maximise the inclusivity of virtual healthcare and utilise technology to improve rehabilitation and disability services.

The VirtuCare Project is supported by the Australian Government through the Australia-India Council of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. It is led by the University of Melbourne and has received in-kind support from partners including Public Health Foundation of India, PRASHO, The George Institute, Monash University, University of Adelaide, The Public Health Foundation, Infosys, the Emmanuel Hospital Association, Mission accessibility, CBM India, St Johns Medical college and eSanjeevani through the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (Mohali, India).

The Asia and the Pacific Outlook Series provides a foundation to foster debate and create awareness about Australia’s place and relationship with the region, draw upon the University of Melbourne’s expertise and research impact, and, deepen collaboration with partners across Asia and the Pacific.
